The Seychelles, officially the Republic of Seychelles (English: Republic of Seychelles, French: République des Seychelles, Seychelles Creole: Repiblik Sesel), is a country and archipelago in Africa north of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, about 1600 km east of the African continent. The Seychelles consist of more than 115 islands. Less than a third of it is inhabited. Of the 95,981 (2020) inhabitants, about 90% live on the main island of Mahé, which is approximately 155 km² in size. The capital Victoria is also located on this island. With its population, the Seychelles are the smallest country in Africa and it is one of the smallest countries in the world. The country scores highest on the development index (HDI) of all countries on this continent, but at the same time also has the highest income inequality.
The Seychelles live for a large part on tourism. Not only because of the beaches with their typical granite formations, but also because of the unique flora and fauna. A local saying states that the Garden of Eden was once located here.
The Seychelles consist of 115 islands, of which the main island of Mahé is the largest with only 154.7 km². These are spread over an area of 400,000 km² of sea. These islands are divided into two groups.
The Central group, also called the Granite Islands. The majority of the population lives here and most tourists go here. This includes the islands with the granite formations that are so typical for the Seychelles. The four main islands are the main island of Mahé, Praslin, La Digue and Silhouette. To the north are two more islands, sometimes referred to separately as the Northern Coral Group.
The second group are the outer islands, also called the Corals Seychelles. These are widely distributed and are again classified into the following five groups:
The Aldabra group, this group consists of 46 islands that are located about 1,000 km southwest of Mahé. Aldabra is also located here, the third largest atoll in the world.
The Amirantes are about 200 km southwest of Mahé. There are 25 islands of which only four are inhabited.
100 km to the south are the Alphonse Islands. These are three small islands of which only one is inhabited.
The Farquhar group consists of four atolls, 700 km south of the main island. Their total area is only 11 km².
The Southern coral group also consists of two islands.
